Rubbish Bin Journalism

June 15, 2006

English Sports journalists are rare breed. May be we shouldn't call them journalists as the essence of the profession is to have an eye for unseeable, for the not-so-obvious. After the first games of this world cup, like lightening these minds penetrated to the whole meaning of the subject, like lightening reduced it to manageable terms. What terms? "Breathtaking lazy Ronaldo"…"Torres the new Galactico"…"Spain the new
Brazil"… hmm, such monumental discoveries! The same journalists who called a great scoop when Jose Mourinho landed Shevchenko are now claiming the 30-year old "a veteran gone to seed". They were suddenly impressed with David Villa who had been scoring goals all season. Spain's bench was judged to be better than
Brazil's.  If Parriera had decided to play 4-3-3 like Spain,
Brazil would have Adriano, Juninho, Robinho, Gilbero Silva; and we would have been told there was no match for the Brazilian   bench.

Isn't there a decent Englsih sports journalist who can explain to us how
Croatia managed to have three players around Ronadinho and kaka whenever they touched the ball? Did they have extra lads on the field? Well, may be it is the scorching heat…may be the Croats are heat-inspired lot. How a team like
Spain which played with one holding midfielder wasn't suspect to counter-attacks? Before unabashedly calling Sheva a galactico of bygone days, shouldn't a hearty journalist analyze the way
Ukraine played?

With such a sad state of English football journalism, no wonder football brains are hard to come by in the country.
